Yes, my darlings, it was a VERY happy holiday in Detroit this past Christmas… this past Chanukah… this past Kwanzaa… this past Festivus. I celebrate them all! :)

I was whisked away to Yoga Dan’s infamous laboratory in Birmingham to co-create some pretty ridiculous improvised Raw Vegan Superfood Fudge.

There’s no recipe, so don’t ask. :) Just pay very close attention, Grasshopper! You will learn the secrets of the Ancients…

I know it’s probably my inner Polish Grandmother coming out… but there’s nothing quite like feeding a whole crowd of people the most amazing raw vegan food on the planet. It just warms the cockles of my heart.

Thanks to Earth Circle Organics, Raw Sangha and Erewhon Natural Market in West Hollywood, I fed a few dozen hungry people this past Sunday at the first Raw Sangha Living Foods Demo & Symposium.

People sampled my Superfood Fudge Brownies and Chia Seed Porridge, featured in my brand-new DVD, Simple Vegan Classics, available now!

Brother Echo (Raw Sangha), Compton Rom and Toni O’ Bryan from Ascended Health and the super-amazing Dee Charboneau from Rawalicious all partook in a Sunday afternoon of heart-opening, mind-expanding, belly-filling bliss!

So, I recently got sick for the first time in over 6 years. A final-round showdown in the ring with bronchitis and a viral infection.

Thanks to my fantastic Naturopathic Doctor, Stephen Steitler, lots of chinese herbs and organic raw food – I scored a TKO!

This recipe – the Bronchitis Bromelain Buster Smoothie – really helped to break up my congestion and mucus.

Pretty rad that it tastes amazing and is loaded with super-potent digestive enzymes, too!

I guess you really do get what you ask for. This year is shaping up to be the busiest yet. From festivals, conferences and classes to speaking appearances and TV pilots, I’m a busy little bee.

Or beaver… or some other busy animal… maybe a platypus? They seem like active!

Yet, I digress! My absolute favorite music/art/performance/food/sustainability/debauchery festival, Lightning in a Bottle – produced by the DoLab, dropped it’s funkiness on Irvine over Memorial Day Weekend and I was lucky enough to be a featured presenter at the Sustainability Stage on Friday night.

Everyday Superfood Alchemy was the title of my presentation. I rocked some Superfood Chia Porridge and Maca Mama Malt Shakes for the hungry crowd of 30-40. They said it would be an hour lecture… turned into a 3 hour extravaganza! So much fun… even without a microphone. Theatre training and voice projection techniques coming to the rescue yet again.

Straight up, the whole weekend was filled with amazing music, friends, raw food, dancing, super hot weather (and people!) and steampunk Burning Man rainbow unicorn fetish fantasies.

In a nutshell: it’s like Burning Man in the forest… albeit much more forgiving with the weather and the elements.

So, in typical fashion, I consumed copious amounts of various raw chocolates, elixirs, superfoods and herbal remedies… and made a lot of fantastic new friends in the process. Amazing how buckets of fudge, trance dancing and giant bathtubs can bring people together.

BTW – ff you haven’t tried LuLu’s Raw Chocolate Bars… do yourself a favor and buy some from this beautiful Goddess’ website. Especially the Maca Love Bar!!! Good Lord!

So, I admit it. We’re pretty gosh darn spoiled here in Los Angeles when it comes to good organic vegan and raw foods. From ferociously decadent haunts like Planet Raw or Madeleine Bistro to insanely super-health-conscious buyers clubs like Essential Living Foods or Rawesome, you can fill your body with the most cutting-edge, amazing foods known to humankind.

Recently, I checked out the newest kids on the block – KindKreme in Studio City (formerly known as NiceCream) and Mooifood in Echo Park. My palate has been getting a serious workout lately.

KindKreme is dropping all kinds of ice cream madness on the world. Not only do they have over 20 flavors of scoop ice cream – (my personal favorite being the pistachio ice cream) – they also have raw vegan soft serve. Let me say that again so you can hear me clearly… RAW VEGAN SOFT SERVE! Do you know how long I’ve waited for that to come to fruition? Holy Sugarcones! Yes, in both chocolate and vanilla. My personal favorite is the banana parfait with a chocolate and vanilla swirl, organic bananas, maple pecans, Cafe Gratitude Granola, fudge sauce and macadamia caramel. Truly the breakfast of champions. These ladies are rockin’ it like a hurricane, fo’ sho’! Do yourself a favor and get your tastbuds to Studio City… stat! You ain’t never had ice cream like this before. When your inner three-year-old comes out to play with Shelley, Mollie and Mimi – tell ‘em Jason sent you.

After a pretty radical Grand Opening party at Mooifood last month, I finally went there this evening for a proper sit-down dinner on the elegant tip. I ordered a variety of goodies, starting with the Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl Ice Cream and Pralines N’ Cream Ice Cream. Great start! The consistency and flavor were both fantastic. What really rocked my socks off was the Orange Jackfruit Chicken! First of all, it tasted like a traditional Chinese takeout sweet n’ sour chicken… but way lighter and much more flavorful. It was comfort food to the max! The sauce was sheer perfection. Hats off to Stephen Hauptfuhr for nailing this one. I topped it off with a sugary and salty Snickers pie. The decor is totally funktafied, with many thoughtful touches of classy, vintage 1920′s Los Angeles. The Iggy and the Stooges and New Order soundtrack was the icing on the cake, though. Playlist par excellence. Kudos, kids!

Next on the list? Lesa Carlson’s brand-spanking-new Summer menu at LifeFood Organic in Hollywood. Rumor has it that she’s got a pretty insane raw vegan tuna melt on the menu coming next week.

Raw vegan cheese that actually melts? That will be a game-changer, y’all.

Cafe Gratitude in Los Angeles!?!

First things first, y’all. Let’s get to the poop and paperclips:

CAFE GRATITUDE IS OFFICIALLY COMING TO LOS ANGELES!!!

If there was a way I could make those words explode with rainbow sprinkles, fireworks and baby dinosaurs, believe me, I would do it!

This past weekend, I went to Cafe Gratitude’s workshop, Fulfilling Love’s Promise, at the Rose Temple in Venice, California. To be simple and direct, it was nothing short of a life-changing experience.

Matthew and Terces Engelhart moderated the workshop by balancing a delicate line between parental archetypes, comedians, gurus and everyday people who just want to share their chocolate chip cookies with you. I am always inspired and moved by the opportunity to connect with them and co-create the vision of a open, honest, accountable, inspired and love-filled community. There were over 200 people at the workshop from all over Los Angeles – and, let me tell you, the room was bristling and crackling with an infectious energy. And then… the best part…

They announced they’re coming to Los Angeles this year!

Now, I may get spanked 33 times for saying this in my blog post – but the buzz needs to start somewhere, doesn’t it? Seriously, since they opened in San Francisco in 2004, I’ve been DREAMING about the day that they would arrive in Los Angeles. So, they’ve signed a lease in Los Angeles (Larchmont/Melrose area) with construction starting this summer and plans for a winter grand opening! My heart fills with so much excitement and joy, I feel like a pile of pop rocks on a teenagers tongue!

If I were a menu item, I would be “I am Supercalafragalistic”.

For real!

As a delicious indication of things to come, Matthew and Terces’ daughter, Mollie, is opening her organic, raw and vegan ice cream parlour in Studio City this coming Saturday – May 15 – with a bevy of splendid superfood scoops that make you want to shoop! Like the Salt n’ Pepa song.

I am beyond grateful – borderline overjoyed – that we are being blessed here in Los Angeles with so much love, so much innovation and so much community synergy. Cafe Gratitude

has opened me up to the possibilities that business and relationship can be a path to true awakening. And if their continued success and presence in the San Francisco Bay Area is any indication, we are in for some amazing surprises as they spread their empire of raw vegan goodness down to Southern California.
